Forest Goodness

Fir Balm inspired by Hildegard von Bingen

The fir tree isn’t just a symbol of vitality and resilience—it’s also a fascinating tree with a long tradition in herbal medicine. For centuries, people have made fir balm from its needles and resins—a classic care product valued for its warming and soothing properties. Whether you’re caring for stressed skin or just want a mindful self-care ritual, fir balm brings its special touch wherever warmth and relaxation are needed.

What is fir balm used for?

Fir balm is super versatile for skin care, especially:

  • as a warming self-care ritual during the colder months
  • to care for stressed skin
  • as a soothing massage after physical activity
  • as a mindful evening ritual

Massaging in the balm creates a cozy, warming effect—a favorite self-care ritual.

What’s in fir balm?

Fir balm contains essential oils and resins from the fir tree, often blended with other botanicals like spruce, rosemary, or camphor. These ingredients provide:

  • that signature forest scent
  • a warming feeling on the skin
  • nourishing properties
  • a pleasant aroma

Especially in the cold season, fir balm is a popular natural care product—gentle, warming, and with a lovely scent of forest and nature.

Fir balm and Hildegard von Bingen

The fir tree also plays a role in Hildegard von Bingen’s teachings—as a “warming tree” that Hildegard highlighted in her writings. While there are no original fir balm recipes from her, her teachings put a lot of emphasis on external preparations with resinous tree substances. So, a pure fir balm can definitely be seen as inspired by Hildegard’s approach to care.

How to use fir balm

It’s super easy to use:

  1. Apply a small amount of balm to the desired area
  2. Gently massage in until fully absorbed
  3. If you like, support with a warm cloth or hot water bottle
  4. You can use it up to 2–3 times a day

Tip: It also makes a great soothing foot massage ritual in the evening.

Make your own fir balm

If you love making your own balms, here’s a simple basic recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp fir needles (fresh or dried)
  • 100 ml olive oil or almond oil
  • 10 g beeswax
  • Optional: 5 drops of essential fir oil

How to make it: Gently warm the needles in oil and let them infuse for about 30 minutes (don’t boil). Strain, melt with beeswax, and pour into a screw-top jar. Store in a cool, dark place.

Buying fir balm

If you don’t have time to make your own, you’ll find high-quality fir balms in pharmacies and natural shops—ideally with organic ingredients and no synthetic additives. When buying, look for:

  • natural essential oils
  • good skin compatibility
  • traditional recipes
