Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is one of the oldest and most well-known herbs in Europe—and it plays a big role in Hildegard von Bingen’s teachings. The Benedictine nun described it as one of the most important herbs in May.
Origin, properties, and ingredients
What is wormwood?
Common wormwood is a strongly aromatic, silvery-gray herb with a bitter taste. Its character comes from the essential oils, bitter compounds, and flavonoids found in its leaves and flowers.
- Origin: Mediterranean region & Central Europe
- Ingredients: absinthin, thujone (in small amounts), tannins, essential oil
- Uses: traditionally as tea, tincture, or in herbal drinks
Wormwood in Hildegard’s teachings
Hildegard von Bingen described wormwood specifically in connection with May:
“Wormwood is the most important remedy in May. It drives away sluggishness of the mind, cleanses the intestines, and strengthens people from within.”
In Hildegard’s writings, wormwood holds a special place—it’s one of the herbs she focused on most in her work.

Wormwood in herbal tradition
Even today, wormwood is valued in herbal tradition—as:
- Wormwood tea: a classic bitter tea in herbal medicine
- Wormwood wine: following Hildegard’s tradition—as a mindful ritual in May
- Herbal extract: one of the most popular ways to use it
Note: Wormwood should be used as a short-term course—the bitter compounds are very strong.
