Great things grow from tradition

The history of JURA

The JURA Naturheilmittel company has a long tradition. As early as 1925, Johann Nikolaus Gollwitzer and the English pharmacist William Shadforth founded Shadforth & Co. in Nuremberg with the goal of producing and distributing biotropic medicines. Biotropic medicines, also known as phytopharmaceuticals, are medicinal products derived from fresh plants. They were intended to represent an alternative to the emerging chemical-pharmaceutical industry of the time.

In 1933, J.N. Gollwitzer left Shadfort to continue his independent work with "JURA Pharmazeutische Fabrik Gollwitzer KG" in Nuremberg-Mögeldorf. Before the outbreak of World War II, he already had 40 employees, a sign that his work was falling on fertile ground. Miraculously, the factory buildings survived the numerous Allied bombing raids, but were completely destroyed in the final days of the war when the Americans invaded.

After the war, Nikolaus Gollwitzer relocated the company headquarters to Konstanz and rebuilt the business there. Demand quickly grew, and in 1958, Gollwitzer launched Acidophilus-JURA®, one of the first preparations for the biological maintenance of intestinal flora. In 1962, Nikolaus Gollwitzer founded a distribution company and pharmaceutical wholesaler under the name JURA CHEMA KONSTANZ GMBH, in addition to JURA KG.

In 1960, Dr. Hertzka became scientific advisor to JURA. The Konstanz physician is the founder of modern Hildegard medicine. Since 1984, JURA has produced, in addition to its traditional medicines, the recipes for Hildegard medicine, which were entrusted to it exclusively by Dr. Hertzka, and trades in the specific dietary foods and spices of Hildegard's nutritional teachings.

In 1997, the most important remedy of Hildegard medicine, the Galangal tablets 0.1 -JURA ®, was officially approved as a finished medicinal product by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices in Germany – the only finished medicinal product of Hildegard medicine on the market.

In 2021, the corporate group consisting of Jura KG and Jura Chema GmbH was dissolved for strategic and logistical reasons and merged into a single company, Jura Naturheilmittel GmbH.

JURA Naturheilmittel is certified by the Tübingen Regional Council according to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) for the proper manufacture of medicinal products and certified according to the EC Organic Regulation for the processing of medicinal plants, herbal teas, and plant extracts, such as Hildegard's elixirs. Expansion of the machinery

Departure into the new millennium

In 2003, a modern, digitally controlled FETTE P 1200 rotary tablet press worth a quarter of a million euros was put into operation.

This allows essential oils, such as galangal powder, to be directly compressed in a completely gentle manner without losing any of their valuable active ingredients. Conventional methods usually require a granulation process beforehand, during which the heat generated causes essential oil to evaporate.

A LÖDIGE powder mixer was installed in 2007. With its ploughshares, this unit ensures completely homogeneous mixing, even of difficult-to-move components.
